Frequently Asked Questions - Health Care Reform

Q: Is my child eligible to stay on Alcoa coverage?

Yes, if he/she is under age 26.

Q: My child was dropped from coverage already because he turned 19, was not a full-time student, and did not elect COBRA. When can I put him back on my Alcoa plan?

You will be able to add him or her to your coverage during this fall’s Annual Enrollment, with an effective date of January 1, 2011. Details will be provided in your enrollment materials.

Q: What if my child was never covered by Alcoa’s health care plan but is younger than age 26?

You will be able to add him or her to your coverage during this fall’s Annual Enrollment, with an effective date of January 1, 2011. Details will be provided in your enrollment materials.

Q: Is it mandatory that I cover my child until age 26 or can I make that choice?

You can make that choice. You should note, however, that under the law, all legal residents must have health care coverage beginning in 2014. Parents are not obligated to provide that coverage.

Q: What information will I have to provide when I enroll my adult child who is not covered today?

You will need to provide proof that you are the parent, such as a birth certificate or adoption documents. If you are a step parent, you may also need to provide your marriage certificate, to show that you are married to the child’s parent. More information about the process will be included in the 2011 Annual Enrollment materials you will receive this fall.

Q: Am I still required to provide full-time student certification to Alcoa?

No. Full-time student status will no longer be a requirement for a child under age 26. So we have discontinued the full-time student certification process.

Q: If my child enrolls in school full-time for the first time this fall, can I add him to my coverage?

Yes, he or she would be eligible to be added to your coverage if he or she is under age 26 and principally supported by you, as explained in the current dependent eligibility rules. Becoming a student is a qualified life event that allows you to make the change immediately and not have to wait for annual enrollment.

Q: My child is married but doesn’t have health care coverage at his job. Can he be covered by my Alcoa plan?

Yes, he would be eligible to be added to your coverage as long as he is under age 26. However, his spouse is not eligible for Alcoa’s health plan coverage.
