There are 3 coverage categories in the drug plan: Generic, Brand 80/20, and Brand 50/50
Generics:
- This can be any generic drug. Typically, you'll never pay more than 10%, and there's no deductible. To help you save, your pharmacist may fill your prescription with a generic drug unless you or your doctor request the brand-name drug.
- If you purchase your drug at a pharmacy, you pay 10% of the costs, and Alcoa pays the remaining 90%.
- If you purchase your drugs by mail, they're typically free. Alcoa pays 100% of the cost when you order them through the mail.
- If you are taking a maintenance medication, you should considering filling it through the mail-order program. If not, after two refills at the pharmacy, you'll pay an extra 10% (20%) of the costs.
Brand 80/20:
- If there are no or limited generic alternatives to treat your condition, it's considered Brand 80/20.
- If you buy these drugs at a retail pharmacy or through the mail, you pay 20% of the costs and Alcoa pays the remaining 80% with no deductible.
- When your Brand 80/20 drug has a generic equivalent, you pay the generic coinsurance (10% if you go to a pharmacy or 0% if you order through the mail) plus the difference in cost between the brand-name and generic drug. Important: The maximum coinsurance limit applies. There is no maximum for the cost difference in the medications.
- If you are taking a maintenance medication, consider filling it through the mail-order program instead of purchasing it at the pharmacy. If not, after two refills, you'll pay an extra 10% (30%) of the costs. The maximum coinsurance limit applies but not toward the extra 10%.
Brand 50/50
- If there are appropriate generic alternatives available, it's considered Brand 50/50.
- If you buy these drugs at a retail pharmacy or through the mail, after the $50 deductible you pay 50% and Alcoa pays 50%.
- When your Brand 50/50 drug has a generic equivalent, you pay the generic coinsurance (10% if you go to a pharmacy or 0% if you order through the mail) plus the difference in cost between the brand-name and generic drug. Important: The maximum coinsurance limit applies. There is no maximum for the cost difference in the medications.
- If you are taking a maintenance medication, consider filling it through the mail-order program instead of purchasing it at the pharmacy. If not, after two refills, you'll pay an extra 10% (60%) of the costs. The maximum coinsurance limit applies but not toward the extra 10%.
