Tips for Using Your Retail Pharmacy

Here are some tips on filling your prescription drugs at a retail pharmacy:

  • Most retails drugs stores participate in the CVS Caremark network, which means that you automatically get the discounted Alcoa price. If you're not sure if your pharmacy is in-network, ask.

  • If you fill a prescription at an out-of-network pharmacy, you pay the full cost of the prescription (the cost that the pharmacy normally charges instead of the Alcoa discounted amount). Then, submit a claim form and receipt to CVS Caremark. You'll be reimbursed at the in-network retail level for covered prescriptions minus your applicable deductible and coinsurance. You're responsible for any difference between the Alcoa discounted rate and the pharmacy's actual charge.

  • If you have an HRA (health reimbursement arrangement) and use Your Spending Account™ card at the pharmacy, specify that the purchase should be "credit," not "debit." If you don't have your card with you when you make the purchase, you can submit a claim for reimbursement after making your purchase. Tips on using your Your Spending Account™ card.

  • When you're at the pharmacy, you also can use Your Spending Account™ card to pay for approved over-the-counter medicines like pain relievers and cough syrup. Or you can purchase these items and submit a claim form (with your receipt) for reimbursement. For a list of eligible Spending Account items, see IRS Publication 502. You can also see a list of eligible expenses on the Your Spending Account web site.

Consumer Tip:
Some retail pharmacies offer an across-the-board low price, such as $4 for a month's supply, for certain generic drugs. Consider if this price is cheaper for you.
