Know Your Medical Costs in Advance
You’re responsible for coinsurance and a deductible for medical services. Now, medical claims administrators are making it possible for your doctors and other providers to provide more cost information up front. Here’s what you can do:
- request an estimate when you schedule your appointment or arrive at the office
- ask your provider to submit your claim when you’re still at the office — that way, you can get an accurate printed statement of the real amount you owe
- be prepared to pay at the time of service
- confirm your charges by reviewing your Explanation of Benefits, which should be posted on your medical claims administrator’s website as early as the day after you receive services
Prescription drugs
And don’t forget that you can get an estimate for a prescription drug anytime by going to www.caremark.com or calling 1-888-291-6372. When you get your estimate, be sure to compare the costs of brand name and generic drugs.
