Using Your Prescription Drug Benefit

Know the basics about your prescription drug coverage:

  • save when you choose generic drugs
  • save when you use mail order
  • get free prescription drugs when you choose generic and order by mail
  • you are protected by the maximum amount that you pay out-of-pocket
  • learn what your prescription drug will cost by contacting CVS Caremark at 1-888-291-6372 or www.caremark.com.

Note: If you elected the HSA (health savings account) medical plan, you must meet the HSA's combined medical and drug deductible before the plan begins to pay for any drug costs.

Why Use Generic Drugs?
Each time you fill a prescription, you could save money by asking for a generic drug. When the patent of a brand-name drug expires, pharmaceutical companies can apply to the government for approval to produce and sell the same drug under its chemical or generic name. And generic drugs are government approved and tested to ensure that they are as safe and effective as the brand-name drug. Generic drugs contain the same active ingredients and work the same as the brand-name drug.

Why Use Mail Order?
Use CVS Caremark's mail-delivery service when you fill a prescription for a maintenance drug—or whenever you don't need your prescription right away. Using mail order is easy and convenient. And CVS Caremark's mail-order pharmacy makes safety a priority. For example, the label on your drug bottle will describe what your pill should look like.

If you need a generic medicine, the best reason to order by mail is that you get generics for free! Alcoa covers 100% of the costs and you pay nothing.
