What are your numbers?
Your “numbers” are your blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels, and body mass index (BMI).
These numbers tell an important story about your health. By learning what your current numbers are and what your targets should be — and working toward those targets — you can reduce your chance of developing serious health problems.
Why do your numbers matter?
- High blood pressure increases the risk for heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
- High cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease, including heart attack.
- High blood glucose can indicate type 2 diabetes, which can lead to blindness, kidney damage, heart disease and stroke, and other serious complications.
- Your BMI indicates your weight status. Being overweight or obese increases your risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, and some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon).
The good news is that high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes are preventable. If you already have these conditions, you can control or even reverse them with a healthful diet, physical activity, weight loss, and medicine.
