Blood pressure

Your heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to all parts of your body. Blood pressure is the force at which blood presses against your artery walls.

It’s recorded as two numbers: Systolic pressure (top number) is taken when the heart is pumping and diastolic pressure (bottom number) is taken when heart is resting.

Quick facts:

  • About 33% of American adults have high blood pressure.
  • High blood pressure has no symptoms and is called “the silent killer.” In fact, nearly one third of people who have high blood pressure don't even know they have it.

How do I find out what my blood pressure is?
High blood pressure is easy to detect with a painless test. You will have this test during your annual physical. In addition, many drugstores or health fairs provide free blood pressure testing. Blood pressure monitors can be used at home. You can use your Health Care Fund to cover this purchase at drugstore.com or your local pharmacy.
