Tips for Eating Healthfully Away from Home

 

It is possible to make healthy food choices while traveling, even in an airport or at a drive-through window. Below are some tips from Highmark:   

  • Plan ahead. Pack healthy snacks for the car or the plane, locate restaurants that include a healthy choices section on their menu, check out fast food restaurant websites for nutritional information before you go.
  • Eat breakfast every morning. A healthy breakfast refuels your body, makes you more alert, and promotes healthier eating for the rest of the day.
  • Eat every three hours to keep from being famished at any meal.
  • Pick healthy choices: Think whole grains instead of refined, lean protein, vegetables and fruits. 
  • Remember to control your portions. No “biggie” items or “super-sizing.”
  • Avoid calorie-containing drinks. Choose water, light lemonade, or unsweetened iced tea.
